Upon graduation from the Viciebsk Teachers’ College in 1916, he became an active organizer and agitator for the Belarusian national cause among the Belarusian soldiers in the Russian army. He was the member of the first Rada (Council) of the Belarusian Democratic Republic, its people’s secretary for military affairs (minister of defense), and later its ambassador to Latvia and Estonia. In 1921–1944, he lived in Latvia, where he became active in organizing Belarusian cultural and civil life. Because of his activism, he was arrested by the Latvian authorities four times. He joined the Belarusian Central Council as its military minister. He was arrested by the Soviet authorities in 1945 and died in prison (or, according to other data, was executed) the next year.
